Meet Carla, a working mother of two who thought higher education was out of reach. Learn how one of our scholarships helped her return to school—and inspired her children to dream bigger, too.
For many parents, the idea of going back to school while raising kids and working a job seems impossible. But for Carla, a determined single mom of two, a local scholarship didn’t just make school possible—it changed everything.
Her story is one of perseverance, hope, and the power of believing that it’s never too late to build a new future.
Meet Carla
Carla had always dreamed of becoming a nurse. But after her second child was born, that dream got pushed aside by diapers, long shifts at a diner, and the constant pressure of just making ends meet.
“I wasn’t thinking about school. I was thinking about how to feed my kids and keep the lights on,” she said.
Still, the dream never left. And when she heard about our scholarship program from a friend at church, she hesitated—but applied anyway.
“I almost didn’t fill it out,” Carla admitted. “I didn’t think someone like me would get picked.”
A Path Opens
Carla was selected for a tuition scholarship to attend a certified nursing assistant (CNA) program at a local community college. She also received access to:
- Free child care assistance referrals
- Mental health counseling
- A weekly mentorship check-in with a volunteer who helped her stay on track
Within a few months, things started to shift—not just financially, but emotionally, too.
“I finally felt like someone saw me—not just as a mom or a waitress, but as someone who had something to give.”
The Ripple Effect
Today, Carla works full-time as a CNA at a community health center—and she’s already talking about enrolling in a full RN program next year.
But perhaps the most beautiful part? Her children saw every step of her journey.
“My son told his teacher he wants to go to college like me,” she said, smiling. “He’s only six.”
Why It Matters
Carla’s story is one of many. Every scholarship we award is more than a check—it’s a vote of confidence. It’s saying, “We believe in you. You’re worth investing in.”
When we remove barriers to education, we open up more than just doors—we open futures.
